Hello.
I just got a new Blichmann 10 gal kettle. I am really loving it after 2 brews!

I have heard John Blichmann talk and he and his company seems to really know there stuff. However, it seems my sight gauge might be off. So I did a test. I checked my scale with a 200 gram approved weight and the scale read 200 g. Knowing that a gallon of water weighs 8.35 pounds and equals 3.7875 kg, I weighed out 18.937 kg of water or 5 gallons. I did it at 3.7875 kg/1 gallon increments. My kettle was level according to my level as well. The numbers did not match up. I am thinking "I am a moron somewhere."

Can someone help me out here?

Thank you in advance.

I would email Blichmann, they're very good about responding.  My guess would have to do with the temperature of the water and its mineral content.  One gallon of pure water at 35° F weighs 8.35 lbs.  If you already took this into account, I would say you need to recallibrate the sight glass.  I sure they can tell you how.

By the way, I'm very jealous, I would love one of those pots--just not in the budget right now.

Uh, NO! I figured I wasted enough water today, so I used my pool water. Pretty sure that water was not 35* seeing how the temperature here is 81* with high humidity.  Wink
Not to mention the chemicals. I THINK I can smell chlorine.

Thanks for your help     Lips sealed

How far off was it? You added 5 gallons, what did the gauge read?
