So I've got a friend who's a real live legit chemist.  She's got science equipment in her closet just in case she needs it.  She offered to let me borrow one of her stir plates cause she had a few.  I took the simple one.  She offered to let me use the one with adjustable heat but I declined thinking I wouldn't need it.  So, she can either pilfer the pyrex-ware that I need or get it for me at cost if her shop doesn't have it.  What do you guys used with your stir plates?

I have 1and 2 liter Erlenmeyer flasks.  I've tried gallon jugs but the stir bar doesn't make contact.  I've heard of people who use some sort of ball bearings in place of a stir bar in those type of containers.

I have the 2000ml Erlenmeyer flask, you can get a bigger flask it you need really big starters.

I have a regular stirplate, you don't need the heat........the fermentation and the unit itself will generate plenty, actually I put one of those nonslip rubber mats on the top of my stir plate and then the flask to try and insulate the flask from some of the heat.

I would say a stir plate is definitely on the list of things you need if you are serious about brewing

By non-slip rubber mat, do you mean the ones used to open jars?  I have one of those.

Seems like the consensus so far is for a 2-liter Erlenmeyer flask.

Thanks guys,

I would like to do that, but I am not sure I'm that handy.

I know I could make one.  Being a single full-time dad and all doesn't leave a whole lot of time for all my projects.  I've got a brand new freezer that's over a year old that I want to make a keezer out of that I just haven't had the time to make, yet.
