Well all....i'm finally make the switch.....i'm going to start keggin ! I picked up a chest freezer on craigslsit for $75 bucks. It should fit two kegs. Now i'm trying to decide whether i want to put a tower on it or build a collar. I've heard all of the pros and cons of both. Anyone have any suggestions? Which ones better?! A tower sure would look sweet! Can't figure out how to post images!

Well, i have had both and my current kegerator is a Magic Chef with a ceramic beer tower!
I perfer my current one, the tower looks good and is easier to clean.
You can build your own ceramic 2 tap tower by drilling a hole in the bottom of a ceramic beer stein, and attaching a stainless collar to the top of the stein, drill two holes into that at right angles and installing the beer taps thru the stainless collar.
Then run the beer lines up thru the bottom of the stein, attach the lines to the taps and then use a 3/4 lamp threaded collar to attach the beer tower to the kegerator hole that you will drill into the top of the kegerator!
Wa La, a ceramic beer tower that cost about $75 to build and looks as good as any $500 to $1000 commercial ceramic beer tower!
Ceramic Beer Stein $5, Tower Tap Kit $50, the jealous look on your friends face, Priceless!

I think if you are going with a two keg system you should definitely do the tower.

towers are the best looking me thinks. but can be a little $$$.. I got a upright so its drill through the door . but the beer will taste just as good out of a cobra tap. glad you are still alive and brewing gram. we havent heard from ya in long time.

It has been a while. I've been real busy with work, but my brewing has picked back up (especially since i'm makin' more $$$$) Two concerns with a tower. 1. will the top be structurally strong enough to support the tower...i'm thinking i might attach a wood top to strengthen it. 2. Air cooling the tower. Does anyone else do this? I'm wondering if i could run copper pipes up the tower and have the beer lines run inside them, letting the copper cool the lines since it transfers temp so well.

I have no ideal about (1) but you could bolt some wood under or over the top.
as for #2..copper would work good, and so will a small fan from a puter. will this be in the house where it has A/C, or out in the garage where it gets hot.

The top should be strong enough to handle a tower. I can't imagine that a tower will weigh even close enough to damage the structural integrity. Unless of course you are using Osmium or Iridium for the tower material. Also, I am not sure you need to cool those lines in the tower. I mean, you aren't going to have more than a foot of hose in the tower. That's maybe an ounce of liquid. I can't see how you will even notice. Doesn't seem worth the expense for so little liquid that's not refrigerated.

Well i've almost finished the top. I stained a nice piece of hard wood to kind of dress up the top. only problem is there are two spots where the wood did not take the stain. i sanded between coats....but still nothing...any experienced craftsmen have any suggestions for filling in these "unstainable spots?" You shoudl be able to see the spot on the left side

I am really jealous now, expecially since my relatively new (2 year old) ice chest kegerator went kaput last week. I haven't looked at it yet, but will have time this weekend to check out what is wrong with it.

Very Nice!! Where is it going to go? Are you going to build it into a bar or dress it up and leave it free standing?
