I am going to breakdown and plant a 100 foot row of 3 kinds of hops, but the south texas weather might be a problem!

I will have to hit up Johnny-Max for information, he lives down here to and has been successfully growing hops for quite a few years!

Hey, Johnny what is a good hop(s) for down here?Huh?? Cry

Now I know why mine are taking over my yard!!  I think it would be fun to plant a hop rhizome and a horseradish root next to each other and let them fight it out for control...

Are you going to divide that monster Hob?  It looks like you could get a bunch of new plants that would produce immediately.  I have never tried to move an entire crown,  it's from trying to contain them that I get all my rhizomes.  I've also split some in half and moved the well mutilated half to a new location.  What once was 10 crowns has now kind of become a hedge, I try to thin them in the Spring but they just fill back in.  I probably spend an hour every other day in May just cutting back shoots.  Inevitably, at some point, I just give at the chaos returns.

Maybe I will have to get a big clay planter and try this hop thing out. My black thumb may turn slightly more green. Horseradish and hops in one pot. Yup. Gotta try that!

I'm down in Richmond and mine don't burn up, as long as I water them sufficiently.

Great news!!  We've had a week of rain and/or 50 degree weather.  All the snow is gone!!  It won't be long til the ground thaws and the hops (and asparagus!) make their appearance.  As soon as I can, I will be ripping and tearing on the hops (30 feet of Liberty--ten hills originally) to try to assert some sort of control over them.  I will gladly trade for rhizomes (not Cascades--that's my other hops), homebrew or just give them away, whatever you want to do.  In past years, it's been mid-April, I'll keep you posted.

That is biggest crown that I have ever seen.
Most folks chop of the roots within a foot of the crown.   I have see roots go out 6 feet from a crown.

Growing is the easy part.....harvesting them takes a lot longer.
You will need to get a dehydrator and a vacuum sealer for freezer packs....

Nice Hob
My Chinooks took off first this year and the Cascades aren't doing too bad either. The Chinooks are 3/4 up the pole now, this is my 3rd year for hops and even the ones that haven't done well before are climbing so I am very encouraged about this year harvest.
I really have more Cascades than I want..........how do you guys think Cascades would do as a bittering hop......I got them comming out my ears and need to figure out something to do with all them.

Hagen uses Cascades for bittering all the time.  His beers come out great!

Ed, I would recommend making either a hop tea or a pale beer to figure out the intensity of the alpha's.

Hi, new to this forum but was wondering if anyone growing hops now would be willing to swap a rhizome or two or three for some heirloom seeds or something I have. I want to grow some hops for next year and I have plenty of land to grow them on. Hell maybe we can work something out with sending you back some hops.

Where do you live, the Cascades and Chinooks grow great around Pittsburgh. I will be trimming mine back after the season.

This is my 3 year for growing hops and that seems to be the magic year. All of the hops are growing this year and the Cascades and Chinooks have hit the top of the pole already.
In fact while I was out of town I had one variety grow across to the strings of another variety. By the time I discovered that, they were too intermingled to seperate out.
